Annie’s Apple Crisp

The yummy apple crisp is simple enough for a family dessert or nice enough to serve for company, but easy enough to make for a potluck or holiday hoopla!

The yummy apple crisp is simple enough for a family dessert or nice enough to serve for company, but easy enough to make for a potluck or holiday hoopla! This here is a legitimate family recipe. My mom has a small but insanely delicious bag of tricks when it comes to desserts. She makes the best Scotch Krispies, cobbler (this recipe is a combo of both of my moms), chocolate cake, and apple crisp. The apple crisp, however, is my grandma’s recipe…who’s name isn’t actually Annie, but Doris!

I believe it was my brother who just started calling her Annie…maybe because he was trying to say Granny? I don’t know, but Annie is the name I always called her. She did pass away when I was really young, like first grade, so I didn’t get the opportunity to know her very well, but my mom says that I am more like my grandma than her.The yummy apple crisp is simple enough for a family dessert or nice enough to serve for company, but easy enough to make for a potluck or holiday hoopla!

I don’t know how much of a foodie she was, but I have a small handful of recipes that were hers and they are all amazing. At least, they are in my family’s opinion. The thing I like about her recipes is that they are incredibly simple – perfect for my season of life, if you know what I mean.

I grew up with my mom making this recipe for pretty much any family function that required a dessert. This crisp and my mom’s scalloped potatoes (a recipe I’ve not been lucky to receive – let alone get permission to share! – yet) are the core of what I would call my mom’s “go to” potluck recipes.

I’m sure your mom has a couple of those recipes of her sleeve, too!

Am I right?

The recipe is basic. Simple. It calls for apples – they stand behind their Golden Delicious for this recipe, but I’m more of a Granny Smith kind of girl. But also, I couldn’t find any…anywhere!

Is there a Golden Delicious apple shortage I don’t know about?

The apples get a scrumptiously easy crisp topping – I’m talking super basic. But I added a couple of things to make it more how I like it. Basically the crisp topping is is oats, sugar, flour, cinnamon, salt, nutmeg, ginger, and butter to bring it all together before it gets packed on top of the apples. The yummy apple crisp is simple enough for a family dessert or nice enough to serve for company, but easy enough to make for a potluck or holiday hoopla!

Aside from the baking dish, you’re dirtying only one extra bowl!

We bake it until just before the apples turn to applesauce and until the crisp topping gets a nice golden brown color to it and then we serve it with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. You could do both…I mean go big or go home right?

The yummy apple crisp is simple enough for a family dessert or nice enough to serve for company, but easy enough to make for a potluck or holiday hoopla!I love this recipe – it feels very homestyle, very accessible. No fancy ingredients, just a lot of what you probably already have on hand. Actually, my mom makes this almost every year for the 4th of July – and anything with apples always feels very Americana to me.

Go ahead and tuck this recipe away on one of your Pinterest boards for when you bring a meal to someone, have a potluck to go to, have a gathering and you’ve been asked to make a dessert, or if you simply want to surprise your sweet family.

I hope you love it as much as my family does.

Annie’s Apple Crisp

Yield: Serves 6-8
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 30 minutes
Total Time: 45 minutes

The yummy apple crisp is simple enough for a family dessert or nice enough to serve for company, but easy enough to make for a potluck or holiday hoopla!

Ingredients

  • 5-7 large Golden Delicious or Granny Smith Apples, peeled and sliced.
  • 3/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup oats
  • 1 cup sugar, granulated
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp ginger
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup cold butter (1 stick), diced

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Grease a 9x13 baking dish and set aside.
  2. Peel and core apples before slicing - don't worry about making them too thin. Place apples in greased baking dish.
  3. In a medium sized bowl, combine the rest of the ingredients (except the butter). Add diced butter to the bowl and with a pastry blender, work together the dry ingredients to form a good, packable crumb - this could take 5 - 10 minutes.
  4. Spoon the mixture over the apples being sure to pack it in so that it's hugging the apples. Bake for 30-45 minutes, or until apples are tender and the crisp topping is golden brown. I suggest check the apples at 30 minutes, and then checking each additional 5 minutes. Be careful not to overtake or you'll have applesauce with a delicious crisp topping.
  5. Serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
